Doesn’t it just feel better going to sleep at night with a tidy bedroom? I totally feel the same way about my work space. If you knew me, you’d know that I am by no means a clean freak, but there’s something about having your work space ‘just so’ at the beginning of a work day that helps me to kick ass!
Here are some ways to control your environment, straight from my desk to yours…
DESK – Clean of clutter, if you have papers or other things, give everything a place. When it’s picked up, it looks clean. Make sure that you have space to do the things that you need to do. I know that I need space for my mouse, room for my water, coffee mug and French press. I also take pen to paper a few times a day, so I need space for my notebook so I can write comfortably, too. I love having a window. I work alone, so it keeps the day from being a bore. Maybe photos help you, or pictures of dream trips, or even knick-knacks. I have some of my favorite things that I like to surround myself with. And, a timer! A classic kitchen timer or go old school with an hourglass. If nothing else, it’s a reminder to stay on task!
SOUND – What you hear while you’re working definitely has an effect on how you work. What you want to hear is different for everyone. The most important thing here is to try to control what you hear. Close your doors, turn on the tunes, or put on some noise-cancelling headphones if you want no noise. Some of my favorites are listening to movie scores (not soundtracks, only the instrumental), music in foreign languages (doesn’t mess with me when I’m trying to write) or I listen to SimplyNoise, a white noise-maker.
SMELL – If you’re sensitive to smells, you’ll want to pay attention to this, too. The smell of lavender really soothe you? Get a diffuser for your office and keep things zen.
Hopefully these tips on managing your work space can help you. What tips can you share?
