How to Make Time for Yourself Every Day

 

Making time for yourself is the beginning. It’s the beginning for being your best self, for figuring out that work problem that is nagging, for being a better friend, spouse, parent. It’s just the beginning.

The first step in making time for yourself is making the decision that it’s important. You have to make the decision for yourself that taking time that is just for you is important. Once you’ve made that decision, the other pieces can start to fall into place.

  • Decide how you will use the time that you create for yourself
    Decide when that time will be — every morning, lunchtime, your morning commute, evening commute, right before bed. What works for you?
    Taking this time and creating a daily ritual can make it easier to make a routine. Take this time to take a bath, read, listen to music, take a walk, stretch or do yoga, whatever is the best way for you to decompress and just be you for a few minutes

Challenge Yourself!

Get out of that rut! Nothing better to get you out of a hole than to push yourself to do something out of your comfort zone. Challenges are great ways to get yourself to commit to something you wouldn’t normally do, for a set amount of time — or maybe start a new habit! Push yourself, you never know what your mind or body can do until you ask it to do it!

  1. Decide on a challenge
  2. Set duration
  3. Prepare for success
  4. Have a support group – tell someone!
  5. Don’t be too hard on yourself
  6. Reward!
  7. Assess – is this something you want to incorporate into your life?

Create More Time in Your Day

Time! It’s what most of crave more of, all the time. If you’re a parent, a hardworking professional, a student, whoever you are — most of us want more time in our day. Creating a little bit of space in your day can do wonderful things for your psyche.

Here are some little tweaks to your life that you can make to create some time here and there throughout the day:

  • Delegate – give things up if you can, to other people, or to software, hire someone, etc. — you can’t do it all — not worth your precious time; outsource
  • Eliminate distractions
  • Say no
  • Manage email
  • Place for everything
  • Evening for yourself — make it an appointment
  • Monthly treat
  • Exercise
  • Commute on public transportation
  • Arrive early to appointments and take that time for yourself — read, write, meditate
